In today's video I am going over the recent solar flare and activity that we experienced and I point out some things that most are not considering or thinking about when these type of storms happen. I go over how you can take precautions to protect yourself and why our so-called leaders haven;t don anything to help the situation.

    According to the NFPA, National Fire Protection Association, unplugging the power source to equipment, and unplugging outside antennas and (GROUNDING) them, will give you about 99.9999% protection against a lighting strike. Nothing is guaranteed. The EMP from a close by lightning strike can do a tremendous amount of damage to sensitive electronic equipment. Grounding does not prevent this. Perhaps a Faraday Cage might help. So, for better protection, disconnect your coaxes and ground both the center conductor and shield to your external ground rod. This will keep the difference in potential, static, drained off to ground and by doing this will prevent a lighting strike to your antenna/s. I would also recommend installing some Alpha Delta surge protectors on those coaxes outside of the home. Continue unplugging the power sources. You'll be fine.

    I can appreciate the attempt at calling this non tech, but honestly, it still is. The tools alone needed to accomplish this for any average non-tech/trade person would cost easily hundreds of dollars. It's a fine build and antenna, no doubt. Just don't sugar coat this and make people think this is something anyone could do.

    Jericho. It was a series that ran maybe two seasons on CBS several years ago, maybe around 2006 to about 2008? Something like that. Anyway, it as a FANTASTIC series about a small town called Jericho Kansas. It’s the normal small town thing where everyone knows everyone and their dog. Then the mayor’s son comes home. Nobody’s seen him in at least five years and when he shows up, everyone has questions. There’s an old romance with a beautiful girl he had a thing with in high school or shortly after. There’s unsettled bad blood between him and his father the mayor and he leaves town, with unfinished business all around. Then WW3 starts. A mushroom cloud from what used to be Denver Colorado. It’s a post apocalyptic series where people who were in fishing tournaments a few years before are now at war with each other. Imagine one small, one-horse town with a machine shop, the other with a large salt mine. They literally go to war over resources. Every episode opened with a cryptic scenario and Morse Code in the theme music. Good stuff.

      I am very familiar with Jericho. LOVED that show. bought season 1 & 2 on DVD and I also have the trade paperback of season 3, which was the last installment the writers made. I still believe in the back of my mind that the show was cancelled because it was teaching too many people how to survive. I still try to decode the Morse at the beginning of each episode. Probably better to practice the pcb soldering with a wire or component going through the pcb hole. Usually the biggest issue with pcb soldering in making sure the solder flows to the other side of the board. I like the demo on hooking the wires together. according to another youtuber the folding antenna is made of brass. But you say it’s light. Perhaps the ferrules? HOA question, can they do anything about temporary antennas you take down when you finished? Might depend on the HOA, seems they can vote in rules.

      It seems to be aluminum to me, I could be wrong. I honestly have not used that antenna for a few years now since I discovered other antennas that work just as well with no where near that price tag. It was one of my first antenna purchases when I first got into ham radio and I have since found much better ones. This one is cool, but quite overpriced. As for HOA's, first I hate them all! Second, if you are operating your radio and have an antenna up and take it down shortly after you finish, I don't think the HOA should have any issue with it. The populace has given HOA's too much power to the point where your PRIVATE PROPERTY no longer means anything. Someday the people will wake up and end that insanity. @@HR4NT I’m new in ham radio, I considered MPAS but in Australia it costs $850. Wolf River Coils are more reasonable. In Australia they are called body corporations, they don’t seem as bad. I’m rethinking the home situation because I got a S9 noise floor but If I take the rig to a picnic, the conditions a perfect for silent HF with weak signals and everything.

      @@darylcheshire1618 Sometimes you have to do that in my situation I have a very high noise floor at my house so in order for me to enjoy radio without all the noise I have to go somewhere else which is not necessarily a bad thing. Do what you gotta do to build enjoy radio and enjoy the hobby.

    many thanks for your efforts. new to listening to 11m and wondering why conditions seem to be stuck south of 40°N for months, besides a dozen days scattered in that amount of time. last year, it was going nuts very often at this time. sun's magnetic poles flipping have anything to do with that? been on the radio for 2.5 solar cycles, but never knew what made it all work till about a year ago

    • @HR4NT
      @HR4NT 24 дня назад

      The solar cycles affect radio propagation differently during those cycles..it will eventually calm down for a bit and this same process will most likely repeat similarly in the next solar cycle. I honestly do not know the minute details of how the solar cycles affect or when they will cause issues with propagation. I hope this helps a bit. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

    I'm learning now to get my tech. Not a lot of people like me in the HAM stuff so it should be interesting. I'm learning alot, thanks! I plan on making shorts to document me learning HAM radio, as well as some gardening and wildlife stuff around my house. Subscribe to help me get the number I need to livestream! Thanks whoever may read this. And Thank you for the video, I think I'm just about ready to purchase my first HF unit(Just to listen until I get my testing done of course!)

      Hey that is a fantastic idea and is also how my channel got started. I was documenting my journey in radio and also saw a need for clarification to simplify the explanation of things in radio that others just weren't doing. So best of luck! Knock out that license test and join the community! Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

      @@HR4NT passed my tech yesterday! Studying ham study app now for the general. Think I'm gonna take 3 or 4 weeks before I go test, though honestly I feel like I could pass it nearly now I just wanna understand it more. They told me around Tuesday my call sign would be up on the website. Thanks for your videos I'll keep watching them all!

    Thank you for such a great video! I am new to this hobby and still have mountains to learn, so this information is very helpful. If I had to ground to my fuse box ground, then it would have to be like yours, mighrt have been, around, over and through, etc. So I have been reading as much as I can about how to handle this. Your idea is very much in keeping with what I have read. A direct or close strike will fry everything that is plugged in, no matter the ground situation, or so I have read. The articles I have read say as you do... UNPLUG!!!. I used to live in Florida, had a direct lightning strike on an oak tree in the back yard. Bark was stripped off the tree and the neighbor behind me lost everything eclectrical that was plugged in. I was born in Fl, so everything I had was, yep, unplugged. Tks again!!!

    • @HR4NT

      The topic of grounding in ham radio is almost as bad as talking politics at a family gathering! I decided to use a little common sense and keep it simple. Unplugging checks EVERY box in safety and protection of my investment. I am glad others are seeing the same thing. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

    Scott, great build video, thanks for that. I have a 5 foot strip of land between my shed and the fence, do you think this antenna would work well in that location with radials only going out two directions and with the shed and fence so close?

    • @HR4NT
      @HR4NT 24 дня назад

      I think that should work fine. The radials can be in whatever pattern you have available. It may not be ideal, but I don't think you will get any noticeable loss in performance from the antenna. I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!
